Meet “The Merciless” by Danielle Vega For Some Gore, Terror, and Crazy-Ass Teen Girls

So, I was visiting a friend of mine, Carmel, and she lent me one of her books, The Merciless by Danielle Vega. It was pink, so I thought it was some sort of romance, but when I read the blurb, I was so interested. I’m a big horror fan – you know, the kind of horror that’s paranormal, Gothic, haunted houses, etc.

Sofia Flores is new in town, and meets rebellious Brooklyn and cute Charlie on the first day. She also meets preppy, school’s queen bee, Riley. Riley and her crew (Grace and Alexis) decide to adopt Sofia.

If you saw Mean Girls, the premise is the same except for a twist: Sofia befriends Riley and the former spies on Brooklyn, whom Riley thinks is possessed by a demon (yes, they were quite the religious zealots).

But Riley’s plan to save Brooklyn goes too far: She kidnaps the rebel and plans to drive the demon out by torture.

Alexis, Riley, and Grace right there (except that these girls are quite shallow)

OOH LALA! The characters are pretty distinct and exciting. They didn’t just fade into the background. Sofia is a very interesting protagonist. Like Cady in Mean Girls, she had a toughness and cunning to her. Brooklyn was also pretty fierce. Grace couldn’t really make up her mind, but she tried. Poor Alexis. That’s all I’ll say for now (don’t want to spoil anything).

The Scare

But was it scary? Ooh, for me, yes! The very idea that someone could go that far to take revenge – well. There were some times I wanted to slap Sofia and say, “For God’s sake! You had your chance!”

Brooklyn was tough and level-headed, not giving up through the entire ordeal.

Also, the ending was AMAZING! I really liked it because it was just so awesome.

Although some parts felt like a slasher film, I like the fact that everything happened in one night! It was fast-paced and I finished it in one sitting. Considering that something happened every chapter, the story wasn’t boring.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read about some paranormal stuff and teenage girls who are slightly off their rocker!
